Description:
Small tree. Leaves alternate, broadly ovate to rounded; margin entire. The leaves display bright autumn colours of yellow or red. Flowers in few-flowered axillary clusters, small and inconspicuous, pale green, unisexual on separate trees. Fruit ovoid to subspherical, slightly ribbed as if about to split into six segments, yellow when ripe.
Notes: A very variable species with at least three varieties described for our region. Since all varieties are widespread and we have many records where the variety has not been determined, we have created this aggregate taxon to accommodate for these records.

Habitat: In deciduous woodland, wooded grassland, riverine fringes and on rocky outcrops.
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: From DRC, Burundi and Tanzania to Namibia and northern South Africa.
