Description:
Perennial herb, 25-45 cm high often forming clumps. Leaves mostly basal, oblong-lanceolate, 5-40 cm long, narrowing towards the bas; margin undulate, ciliate-fimbriate. Inflorescence mostly an unbranched, densely flowered spike, often on a short flowering stem. Flowers 2-5 per node, white with spreading or reflexed tepals; anthers 6, bright yellow; filaments shorter than anthers. Floral bracts long, whitish, ciliate-fimbriate, ending in a bristle-like tip, Capsule, 3-angled, 4 × 5 mm, tuberculate when fresh.

Derivation of specific name: brachystachyum: with a short spike
Habitat: In rocky soils and on termite mounds in woodland, preferring moist and shady situations.
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Angola, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, CAR, Congo-Brassaville, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Caprivi-Namibia.
