Description:
Perennial herb with 1-several tufted annual stems up to 60 cm long, occurring in woodland and grassland, often in rocky places. Leaves spirally arranged, lanceolate, 5-15 cm long. Inflorescences terminal, branched, generally lax, many-flowered, hairless. Flowers orange-yellow, 12-18 mm in diameter. Sepals and stamen-filaments hairless. Capsules elliptic to obovate, 2-3-locular, up to c. 4.5 mm long.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: johnstonii: after Sir Henry (Harry) Hamilton Johnston (1858-1927), British administrator and explorer, who collected flora and fauna specimens in many parts of Africa. His best-known discovery likely is the okapi.
