Description:
Annual herb with numerous stems growing from a taproot, prostrate or twining, up to 2.5 m long, more or less densely covered with white spreading hairs, particularly when young. Leaves ovate to ovate-oblong, 2-10 cm long, broadly cordate or rarely subhastate at the base, pubescent or hairless; petiole slender, 1-10 cm long. Flowers axillary, 1-3 on a slender peduncle, up to 6.5 cm long, hairy; pedicels up to 1.9 cm long, hairy, erect in flower, reflexed in fruit. Bracts minute, lanceolate. Sepals (in this subspecies) up to 6 mm long, enlarging in fruit up 9 mm long, unequal, outer lanceolate with a somewhat broadened base; inner narrower than outer. Corola in this subspecies normally pale pink or mauve with a dark centre, c. 1.3 cm long. Capsule globose with an apiculate apex formed by the persistent style-base, hairless.

Habitat: In woodland, Acacia scrub, grassland and cultivated land, on sandy and calcareous soils.

Worldwide distribution: Ethiopia, Somalia, Socotra, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola, Namibia, Eswatini and KwaZulu-Natal South Africa. Also in Arabia.
