Description:
Herb, up to 80 cm tall, tufted or solitary, growing from a small, regularly constricted rhizome with fibrous remains of old leaf bases; roots wiry with tubers at the tips; leaves in 2 rows, linear to linear-lanceolate, 5 – 65 x 1 – 1.5 cm, margins and midribs glabrous or scabrid (never hairy); peduncle flat with scabrid wing (never ciliate-hairy); inflorescence racemose, unbranched or divaricately branched; floral bracts small, dark brown; pedicles articulated below middle, 1 – 3 per node, c. 9 mm long in fruit; perianth white; tepals 7-15 mm long, 3-veined; stamens declinate, in two groups usually 2+4 arrangement; filaments longer than anthers; style declinate, as long as stamens; capsule shallow deltoid, transversely ridged, 2-8 mm long; seeds irregularly folded, c. 1-1.8 mm across.
