Description:
Subperennial or perennial, laxly caespitose. Panicle contracted or open, with numerous spikelets. Glumes not exceeding 10 mm. in length. Lemma 2-3.5 mm. long, excluding callus. Central awn of the lemma slender, usually pallid, diverging at a sharp angle from the lemma, usually plumose in the upper 2/3, naked towards the base. 2n = 44.

Habitat: On open sandy soil (on shallow red Kalahari sand on basalt outcrop, sandy flats, granite sandveld, in sand pockets over limestone cobbles) and on shallow gravelly basalt soil
