Description of the genus
Perennial herbs or shrubs. Leaves (in ours) dentate. Inflorescences of axillary dichasial cymes. Bracts and bracteoles c. as long as calyx. Calyx lobes 5, ovate. Corolla 2-lipped; upper lip 3-lobed, transversely ribbed on the palate. Fertile stamens 4 ; anthers 2-thecous. Capsule with 1 seed in each loculus. Seeds borne on retinacula; with white hygroscopic hairs. Derivation of name: from Latin duo meaning two and sperma a seed, referring to the 2-seeded fruits. Worldwide: 26 species in tropical and southern Africa with one species extending into Yemen. Caprivi: 2 taxa. |
