Description:
Shrub or small deciduous tree with stiff branches. Bark grey, flaking to expose a brownish-pink or rusty-red underbark. Leaves opposite, oblong-elliptic, 5-22 cm long, discolorous, roughly pubescent above, densely grey or yellowish hairy beneath; petiole 5-15 mm long. Stipules triangular, thick, up to 9 mm long, joined as a sheath at the base, densely hairy. Inflorescences on the leafless nodes of older branches, often branched, densely yellowish velvety. Corolla whitish or yellow-green; lobes reflexed, linear-lanceolate, 20-25 mm long, hairy on the outside. Fruit 2-4 cm long, rounded, compressed, crowned by the calyx limb, sparsely pubescent.

Habitat: In sandy soils in woodland or wooded grassland, often on rocky outcrops.

Worldwide distribution: Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Angola.
