Description:
A loosely to compactly caespitose annual; culms up to 100(120) cm tall, slender, erect or geniculately ascending, simple or branched; leaf laminas 2–8(12) cm × 6–15(20) mm, lanceolate-oblong to narrowly ovate, rounded or abruptly constricted and cordate at the base, flat or involute when dry, acute at the apex.Panicle 5–15(20) × 1–2.5 cm, narrowly oblong to lanceolate-oblong, feathery, pallid or tinged with red or purple; racemes up to 4 cm long, erect, very slender.Spikelets 5–9 mm long, oblong, 5–10(14)-flowered; glumes very narrow, the inferior 2–2.5 mm long, finely acute, the superior 3–3.5(4) mm long, acute or obtuse; lemmas 2.5–3 mm long, linear-oblong in profile, pubescent below the middle, the marginal cilia 1–2 mm long, entire or minutely 4-toothed at the apex; awn 2.5–5 mm long, straight.

Habitat: Usually a weed of disturbed and cultivated ground; also in open and wooded grassland, on lake shores and in dambos and riverine vegetation, growing in sandy soils and red dolerite loams
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Arabia, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Sudan, Southwards through east Africa to Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
