Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves usually very narrow and almost filiform, usually with tufts of hairs at the mouth of the leaf sheath. Inflorescence an anthela. Glumes spirally arranged; the lowest 1-2 may be empty, the others bisexual. Perianth 0. Stamens 2-3; stigmas 2-3, the base of the style persisting as a distinct rim or knob. Nutlet biconvex if stigmas 2, trigonous if stigmas 3. Nutlet smooth, tuberculate or, more often, transversely wrinkled. Caprivi: 2 taxa. |
