Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Culms triangular. Inflorescence an open anthela or congested into a dense head. Spikelets with many, (>5) florets. Glumes distichous. Perianth 0. Stamens 2-3. Stigmas 2. Fruit a nutlet, laterally flattened.

Worldwide: c. 70 species, widespread in warm regions.
