Massive lianas, or erect to twining herbs arising from subterranean, or partially exposed tubers; latex white. Leaves opposite. Inflorescence extra-axillary, umbelliform. Corolla rotate, fused part not extending beyond the corona; lobes linear, spreading. Fruit consisting of pendulous follicles. Seeds flattened, ovate with a narrow marginal rim. Derivation of name: for Gustav Woldemar Focke (1810-1877), German physician, naturalist and plant physiologist. Worldwide: 6 species in southern Africa and 2 further species in East Africa. Caprivi: 1 taxon. |
