Common names:
Description: Rhizome erect; scales lanceolate, pale brown, up to 13 mm long, hair-pointed, fimbriate. Fronds tufted, aching, not proliferous. Stipe up to 20 cm, stipe and rhachis matt brown, sparsely set with hair-pointed scales. Lamina 60-90 cm × 30-50 cm, lanceolate in outline, 4-pinnate. Ultimate lobes c. 1-2 mm broad, hairless, oblanceolate, acute, margins entire. Sori cup-shaped, solitary, situated on the acroscopic side of the ultimate segments, protuding from the lobe margin; indusium entire.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: hypo: below and melas: black; probably a reference to the dark environment in which this fern grows
Worldwide distribution: Angola, Bioko, Burundi, Cameroon, Congo, DRC, Equatorial guinea, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Soa Tomé, sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe.
Growth form(s): Epiphyte.
