Description of the genus

Dioecious trees or shrubs. Leaves 5-9-nerved from the base; margin toothed. Male flowers in axillary panicles: perianth of 6-10 lobes in 2 rows; stamens 9-12 in 3-4 bundles; alternating with disk glands. Female flowers in spike-like racemes: perianth similar to male; ovary 1-locular. Capsule 3-valved, with a red aril.

Worldwide: 2 species in tropical and South Africa

Caprivi: 1 cultivated taxon.
