Description of the genus

Evergreen shrubs or small trees. Leaves alternate: lamina thick; margin spiny. Flowers in axillary spike-like racemes. Sepals 4-5 free. Petals larger than sepals with larger petaloid scales opposite each petal and with a fleshy gland at their base. Stamens numerous. Ovary 1-locular; stigmas 4-5. Fruit berry-like at first, later splitting longitudinally.
