Description of the genus

Climbing perennial herbs. Tendrils present, leaf-opposed. Stipules present. Leaves (in ours) pedate, 5-8-foliolate. Inflorescences of usually axillary divaricately-branched cymes. Flowers 4-merous. Fl. bud depressed-spherical, not constricted at the middle. Petals hooded at the apex, caducous. Disk annular. Fruit (2-)4-seeded.

Worldwide: 50 species in the Old World tropics
