Description of the genus

Terrestrial herbs with subspherical underground tubers. Leaf 1, produced after the flowers, elliptic, reniform or almost circular, often with silvery patterns above and purple coloration beneath. Inflorescence an erect raceme. Flowers resupinate; tepals apart from the lip similar, green or brownish-green. Lip 3-lobed to almost entire, sometimes papillate or pubescent with red markings and sometimes with a short spur. Column long. Pollinia 2.

Worldwide: 65 species in tropical and warm regions of the Old World.

Caprivi: 6 cultivated taxa.
