Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Culms triangular. Inflorescence a single ovate or hemispheric head, sometimes more complex additional lateral heads. Spikelets with relatively few, 1-2 (-5) florets. Glumes distichous. Perianth 0. Stamens 1-3. Stigmas 2. Fruit a nutlet, cylindric or ellipsoid, laterally flattened, usually dark brown to black when mature.

Worldwide: 40 species in warm regions, especially Africa and Madagascar

Caprivi: 17 cultivated taxa.
