Herbs, stem simple or absent. Leaves basal or in pseudo-whorls, hairy when young; lamina margins permanently and densely clothed in ferrugineous hairs. Inflorescence 1 (rarely 2-3), consisting of terminal, or sometimes axillary, thyrses, elongate or dense; flowers in small cymes. Sepals 3; petals 3, white sometimes tinged with pink or bluish, small obovate. Fruit indehiscent, fleshy or succulent; often purple or red. Seeds 2, superimposed in each cell, or solitary, or more numerous and irregularly packed.
Worldwide: 25 species endemic to tropical Africa. Caprivi: 1 cultivated taxon. |
