Description of the genus

Perennial. Inflorescence consisting of single racemes, these terminal and axillary. Rhachis internodes and pedicels ± swollen and clavate. Sessile spikelet laterally flattened; callus obtuse arising from the concave apex of the internode; lower glume cartilaginous, with 2 dorsal keels separated by a narrow groove, not winged; upper glume conspicuously winged on the keel towards the apex; lower floret male; upper lemma with a glabrous awn arising from the 2-fid apex. Pedicellate spikelet larger than the sessile, asymmetrically winged, awnless.

Worldwide: 1 species in tropical Africa
