Description of the genus

Inflorescence of solitary or subdigitate nodding racemes; each raceme with 1-3 homogamous pairs at the base. Rhachis internodes and pedicels slender, with a translucent central groove. Spikelets of each pair (apart from the homogamous pairs) markedly different; the sessile spikelet fertile, the pedicellate male or barren. Sessile spikelet: lower glume ± flat; lower floret empty; upper floret bisexual; fertile lemma awned from its entire apex. Pedicellate spikelet larger than the sessile, male or neuter.

Worldwide: 2 species in tropical Africa, India and tropical America
