Description of the genus

Perennial pubescent herbs or sub-shrubs with a woody base, stem and branches faintly 4-angled towards the apex. Leaves sessile or petiolate, oblong-lanceolate to broadly ovate. Inflorescences dense terminal racemes with pedicellate flowers in 3-6 flowered verticils; bracts ovate, persistent. Calyx densely pubescent, 2 lipped, 3 lobed. Corolla bilabiate, outside densely pubescent; tube short, widening abruptly into an oblique dilated throat; upper lip much shorter than lower; lower lip large, oblong. Disc entire or shortly lobed. Fruit composed of nutlets.

Worldwide: 3 species in southern and tropical Africa.
