Description of the genus
Herbs or shrubs. Leaves simple, opposite; large with crystoliths on both sides. Inflorescence of terminal panicles or thyrses. Calyx with equal subulate segments. Corolla much longer than the calyx, 2-lipped, sometimes weakly so; upper lip 2-lobed, lower 3-lobed; petals (in ours) purplish-pink or red. Stamens 2; staminodes 2. Fruit a clavate capsule. Seeds 4. Derivation of name: From Greek odonto meaning toothed, nema meaning a thread or filament, referring to the toothed filaments of the stamens Worldwide: 40 species in New World tropics. Caprivi: 0 cultivated taxa. |
