Description of the genus

Shrubs or rarely small trees. Stipules interpetiolar. Leaves opposite. Flowers few, heterostylous and (in ours) borne in sessile axillary fascicles. Calyx tube subspherical; limb 3-6-lobed. Corolla pink or white, salver-shaped with 4-6 lobes. Ovary 4-12-locular; ovule solitary in each loculus, erect from the base. Fruits succulent, blue. Seeds with fleshy endosperm.

Worldwide: c. 170 species in tropcal Africa, Indomalesia to Australia
