Description of the genus

Shrubs or small trees, evergreen. Branches supra-axillary. Stipules triangular-acuminate. Leaves opposite; domatia 0. Inflorescences of dense congested clusters, sessile or distinctly pedunculate. Bracts and bracteoles sometimes chaffy, fused into cupules. Calyx limb-tube truncate or dentate. Corolla: tube cylindric or narrowly funnel-shaped, densely hairy at throat; lobes 4-5, spreading. Ovary 2-locular; ovule 1 per loculus. Fruits ± spherical. Seeds with fingerprint-like testa.

Worldwide: 20 species in tropical Africa, Madagascar and the Comoros.

Caprivi: 1 cultivated taxon.
