Description of the genus

Perennial herbs or shrubs. Inflorescence paniculate, composed of dichasial cymes. Calyx actinomorphic, divided nearly to base into 5 subequal linear lobes. Corolla subactinomorphic; tube widely campanulate; lobes 5, subequal, contorted in bud. Anthers with 1 theca long-spurred. Capsule with c.6-8 seeds. Seeds borne on retinacula, bearing long white hygroscopic hairs on the margin. Ovules 3-4 in each loculus.

Worldwide: 30 species in tropical Africa and Madagascar

Caprivi: 4 cultivated taxa.
