Description of the genus

Perennial herbs or soft shrublets. Leaves opposite. Inflorescences lax terminal or axillary racemes. Flowers in 2-6-flowered whorls; bracts persistent. Calyx 5-toothed, 2-lipped, accrescent; upper tooth largest, ovate, erect; 4 lower teeth equal, horizontal, lanceolate-triangular or subulate. Corolla ± equally 4-lobed; lobes flat. Stamens 4, included in corolla tube. Nutlets subcircular or oblong.

Worldwide: 17 species in tropical and South Africa and India

Caprivi: 1 cultivated taxon.
