Description of the genus

Annual, biennial or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate. Inflorescence of scorpioid cymes. Flowers bisexual. Calyx 5-lobed, not or only slightly accrescent. Corolla tube short, cylindric or funnel-shaped, closed with 5 scales at the throat; lobes 5. Ovary of 4 separate lobes. Style gynobasic. Fruit of 4 nutlets; nutlets depressed, glochidiate.

Worldwide: c. 75 species in temperate and warm regions, mainly Old World

Caprivi: 4 cultivated taxa.
