Description of the genus

Annual herb (in ours). Stems erect, 4-ridged. Flowers 4-5-merous in axillary cymes. Corolla with a short tube and spreading lobes. Flowers mainly blue, rarely pink or white. Stamens inserted below the sinuses; anthers opening by apical pores; lacking apical and basal glands. Ovary 2-locular. Fruit a capsule.

Worldwide: 65 species in the Old World tropics
