Description:
Prostrate or ascending annual herb with branches up to 22 cm long, sometimes forming mats. Leaves linear to narrowly elliptic, 7-34 mm long, roughly papillose above and sometimes on the main vein beneath; margin entire, often rolled under; petiole absent or 1-2 mm long. Stipule sheathing, 1.2-2 mm long with 3-7 fimbriae up to 1.5 mm long. Flowers solitary or in few-flowered clusters at the axils and nodes; peduncles up to 2 mm long; pedicels 1-3 mm long. Corolla white, lilac, dull reddish or pink; tube cylindic, 0.6-0.9 mm long; lobes 4, 0.5-0.6 mm long. Capsule obconic, c. 2 mm long, white and beaked, hairless or shortly pubescent.

Derivation of specific name: capensis: of the Cape
Habitat: In alluvial soils in cracks of rocks on river banks, in grassland or along roadsides.
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: More or less throughout Africa from the Mediterranean to the Cape. Also in Madagascar and the former Yugoslavia.
