Description of the genus

Perennial herbs or subshrubs. Leaves imparipinnate. Stipules small. Inflorescences of pedunculate axillary racemes, rarely solitary and terminal. Calyx of 5 subequal lobes. Standard subcircular; wings clawed, auriculate; keel petals also clawed. Vexillary stamen free. Style with a tuft of hairs below the terminal capitate stigma. Pod oblong or linear, inflated or flat. Seeds reniform.

Worldwide: More than 50 species occurring in Africa, mostly (c.35) from South Africa
