Description of the genus

Small hemiparasitic shrubs with single haustorial attachment. Indumentum simple. Leaves mostly opposite. Flowers in umbels, 5-merous. Corolla splitting unilaterally with a V-shaped split; tube much longer than lobes; the apical swelling of the flower bud indicating maturity by changing to a darker colour; lobes erect or generally reflexed. Anthers elongate, fitting against the isodiametric or skittle-shaped style; stigma capitate. Fruit usually red when ripe.

Worldwide: 30 species in tropical and southern Africa, one species extending to N Yemen.

Caprivi: 1 taxon.
