Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves usually very narrow and almost filiform, usually with tufts of hairs at the mouth of the leaf sheath. Inflorescence an anthela. Glumes spirally arranged; the lowest 1-2 may be empty, the others bisexual. Perianth 0. Stamens 2-3; stigmas 2-3, the base of the style persisting as a distinct rim or knob. Nutlet biconvex if stigmas 2, trigonous if stigmas 3. Nutlet smooth, tuberculate or, more often, transversely wrinkled.
