Description of the genus

Herbs, undershrubs or, rarely shrubs, usually twining. Leaves alternate, petiolate, entire or toothed, 3-5 nerved from the base. Inflorescence leaf opposed or sometimes axillary racemes. Petals absent. Calyx with 4-5 lobes. Fruit a capsule, strongly 4-lobed, breaking into bi-valved, dorsally winged cocci. Seeds globose or compressed; cotyledons broad and flat.

Worldwide: About 15 species, mostly neotropical, 3 in Africa.
