Description of the genus

Perennials (in ours). Leaves: lamina linear; ligule membranous. Inflorescence of 1-20 ± digitate, conspicuously hairy racemes, bearing pairs of spikelets, those of each pair alike. Spikelets dorsally flattened; callus obtuse; lower glume cartilaginous, often obtuse or truncate, upper glume awnless; lower floret reduced to a lemma; upper lemma hyaline, 2-dentate or 2-fid with an awn from the sinus.

Derivation of name: for Eulalie Delile, 1800-1840, French botanical artist.

Worldwide: 30 species in the Old World tropics.
