Dioecious shrubs with simple hairs, without milky latex. Buds bearing persistent protective scales. Stipules present. Leaves alternate, simple, gland-toothed. Male flowers: calyx closed in bud, splitting later into 3-4 valvate lobes; petals 0. Female flowers: calyx 2-4-partite; petals 0; ovary 2-3-locular. Fruit of 1-3 dehiscent cocci. Seeds subspherical bearing a scarlet aril. Worldwide: 50 species in tropical and South Africa and southern Arabia. Caprivi: 4 cultivated taxa. |
