Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle; spikelets brown, borne singly or in pairs, the pedicels free. Lower lemma 3-nerved. Callus semicircular. Upper lemma 2-lobed, the lobes finely awned and with a tuft of hair on the back below each lobe and a persistent awn from the sinus.

Worldwide: 5 species in tropical and South Africa and Madagascar.

Caprivi: 4 cultivated taxa.
