Description of the genus

Perennial (in ours). Ligule membranous. Inflorescence with raceme-like primary branches. Spikelets purplish. Lower lemma 3-7-nerved. Upper lemma minutely rough with (in ours) a geniculate awn.

Worldwide: 47 species in tropical and subtropical regions, but mainly in Asia

Caprivi: 1 cultivated taxon.
