Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence a dense, spike-like panicle (in ours), rarely open. Spikelets laterally flattened (dorsally in S. interrupta), asymmetrical; glumes prominently ribbed; lower 1/4 to 3/4 the length of the spikelet; upper glume equalling spikelet and gibbous; lower lemma resembling upper glume but less gibbous; upper lemma dorsally flattened, thinly coriaceous to cartilaginous; margin flat or involute but never hyaline

Worldwide: 30 species in tropical and warm areas, especially Africa

Caprivi: 6 cultivated taxa.
