Description of the genus

Monoecious forest grass with broad leaf laminae. Inflorescence a terminal panicle. Spikelets unisexual, 1-flowered, with the 2 sexes mixed or in separate inflorescences on the same plant. Female spikelets much larger than the male. Glumes 2, subequal, often acuminate or caudate. Lemmas awnless, shorter than the glumes, coriaceous or cartilaginous (female spikelets) or membranous (male spikelets). Stamens (2-)3.

Worldwide: 23 species in tropical America; 1 also in Africa and Madagascar

Caprivi: 1 cultivated taxon.
